From its very first opening on Christmas Eve in 1852 as a bookshop,to its closure in 2006, Hills bookshop remained a fondly-rememberedpart of Sunderland's history. 'Hills Are Alive' honours the building’slegacy alongside its re-opening as a new multi-use arts centre,through the creation of a sound art piece based on a series ofstory-writing workshops.

From these stories, and with the invaluable contribution of the voicesof Maryam Almahameed, Hester Dowling, Jo Howell, DanielRichardson, and James Whitman, sound artist and audio producerJay Sykes has created an audio response which mixes these storiesinto a piece of responsive digital art.Featuring music by Omri Smadar.​​​​​​
