We are makers here, we make is a collection of recent pieces by Sunderland paper artist, Ellie Clewlow. Ellie works with discarded books and paper, using traditional craft techniques to explore the ways in which we encode knowledge and reflect on place and identity.
Displayed within the setting of a former bookshop, these works play with aspects of codified and encoded knowledge; with books and maps re-formed into QR codes, Morse code, DNA double helixes and palimpsests.
We are makers here, we make takes its title from a line by local poet, Kirsten Luckins, reflecting on the evolving traditions of making here in Sunderland, while the use of materials that are either sourced locally or which have local resonance, acknowledges the rich heritage of books and paper here in Sunderland.
